As you can see, I made it work! While I was at it, I enhanced the image's contrast and a few other details to result in a better print.
I recently had the opportunity to do some retouching for a gentleman who came to me with a troop panorama from around 1918. It had some heavy water damage and was missing a good chunk of the image, as you can see. He wanted me to see if I could pull out two soldiers from the center of the image and get rid of the guy kneeling in front of them.

From where did you construct the pocket on his belt--one of the other soldier's?

Yes, Dan, there was another soldier about 5-6 guys to the right that had a good satchel belt that matched the perspective and tilt of this guy's belt. I actually replaced the whole belt and then some. The contrast and color were way off though, so I had to fix that so it would blend in seamlessly. I ended up converting the image to black and white, but the client decided he'd prefer the sepia so I re-colorized it. That helped balance out some of the inconsistencies though. I also did some work on the right soldier's face to even out the tone and get rid of that shadow on his jaw.
